Jane Smiley is the author of eleven novels, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning A Thousand Acres (1992), as well as several collections of essays and short fiction. This year she chairs the panel of judges for the prestigious Man Booker International Prize, which recognizes outstanding achievement in fiction by a living author whose works are originally published in, or widely translated into, English. Recently we conducted a podcast interview with Ms. Smiley at the New York Public Library following the announcement of the shortlist of contenders for the prize. We hope our readers will find time, before the prize is officially awarded in June, to explore all the books and authors discussed. (Readers who aren’t yet familiar with Ms. Smiley’s own work are heartily encouraged to catch up on that as well.) Enjoy!

This interview is also available under “Audio” in the Media section of Abbeville.com.
