Chapter 4. Selling the DreamFor the past 50 years, the ability to go where you please and when you please has been an enduring theme in VW camper advertising — even the new VW T5 camper brochure uses a shot of the van against a backdrop of wilderness and mountains as its main image to capture the essence of life with a camper. Brochure shots have always emphasized the outdoor life, showing families or couples relaxing and enjoying themselves in scenic locations. What is especially interesting is the way the brochure pictures over time have become period social documents that capture the changing aspirations, fashions, and lifestyles of five decades. Yet they have one common element: people getting together to have fun away from the stress of daily life. The clothes, hairstyles, and interior fabrics and colors may change, but living with a VW camper is always about fun, freedom, and individuality. The appeal of the VW camper has always been the ability to realize the dream of getting away from it all and being yourself.
Chapter 5.A village in northern Mexico ready for Independence Day celebrations.
Chapter 7. Paint Your VolkswagenThe Spirit of SalcombeThe tradition of brightly colored, so-called hippie buses, sporting flowers, astrological symbols, and psychedelic patterns, was mainly seen in the United States. It captured the freewheeling spirit of the times so much that this image is now linked with the VW bus in the minds of many; but times have changed, and there are also still campers that are works of art in their own right. A good example of this is Fred Crellin’s 1972 camper, which takes a naturalistic approach to camper art with its fantastically detailed airbrushed views of the Salcombe coast in Devon, England, adorning all its sides.
Chapter 14. Tribal GatheringsVan Fest.
IntroductionThe 4711 perfume company bought the first Transporter and painted it in the company colors in March 1950.
Chapter 5. Wide-Eyed WanderersA roadside waterfall in Costa Rica.
Chapter 5.Crossing the Peruvian desert.
Chapter 8. Interior DesignRed Stripe. The Red Stripe bus is another example of exterior and interior design working in harmony. Using the colors and logos of this famous brand of Jamaican beer, the exterior paint matches the brnds red and white, with chrome trim for the silver detailing. The most distinctive and talked-about touch is the use of a surfboard, painted in Red Stripe colors and logo, for the central table.

A brightly illustrated homage to the VW bus in all its forms, including the history of the vehicle and the travel adventures VW owners have undertaken at the wheel of their bus or camper.

Introduced in the 1950s, the VW bus was designed to be multifunctional. Since then, it has come to symbolize fun, freedom, and adventure. VW bus owners fully incorporate their vehicles into their lives: Some treat them as an extension of their home, while others undertake epic journeys in them, across desert and sea, and through Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some strap surfboards to the roof and head for the nearest beach, while others soup up the engines and take them drag racing in California. All will spend hours restoring and customizing them and even more time talking about them with fellow bus owners. Traveling with the VW Bus and Camper is a tribute to this passion, to the owners who have lavished time, effort, and inspiration on their campers, and, of course, to the VW bus itself. This book traces the cult of the camper, from family errands to vacation home to design icon. Above all else, the campervan is living history and readers will find chapters dedicated to travel narratives detailing road trips from England to Afghanistan and back, ad campaigns that sell the VW bus lifestyle, and weddings and other family events that feature buses in their ceremonies. Obsession or addiction? See for yourself.

David and Cee Eccles have been around VW buses since 1976, when they bought a Splitscreen Camper, gave up their teaching jobs, and spent a year living in it while traveling through Persia, Afghanistan, Kashmir, and India. From 1990 they were very active members of the Splitscreen Van Club and for ten years edited the club magazine. Dave has since written two books about the VW camper and is also editor of Volkswagen Camper and Commercial, a bimonthly magazine dedicated exclusively to the VW bus.
