In addition to photographing the spectacular scenes of Carnival, over the years Helmut Teissl has also recorded its musical and auditory phenomena. Spontaneous, rambunctious, and overwhelmingly joyful, the sounds of the musical performers and their equally enthusiastic spectators will transport you right into the thick of the festival crowds. Ten of Teissl's recordings are on the CD that comes with this book, as well as eight major-label studio recordings and two live performances by famous samba artists.

![]() Pagode are the popular folk festivals where the samba originated, and they are especially well attended at Carnival time. It is here that the cariocas, or inhabitants of Rio, hone their musical skills. The atmosphere is extremely casual, and listeners join in singing songs about their troubles and aspirations (CD track 1). Rotating musicians often play without a break until dawn, as though to demonstrate that a true love of life leaves no time for sleep.
