Second Scene: The three Ladies withdraw, and a gaily feathered bird-catcher, Papageno, strolls in. Tamino awakens and questions Papageno. Papageno tells him he catches birds for the Queen of the Night in exchange for food and drink, which the Three Ladies bring him each day. He then boasts of having slain the serpent in order to save the prince.

Papageno
A jolly trapper of birds am I
And tra-la-la is what I cry.
The Birdcatcher is how I’m known,
In every corner, by child or crone.
My snares are laid. My sights are set.
I just whistle them into my net.
Mine’s the life, so gay and free,
For all the birds belong to me!

Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja,
Stets lustig, heissa, hopsassa!
Ich Vogelfänger bin bekannt
Bei alt und jung im ganzen Land.
Ein Netz für Mädchen möchte ich,
Ich fing sie dutzendweis für mich?
Dann sperrte ich sie bei mir ein,
Und alle Mädchen wären mein.
