Twelfth Scene: Meanwhile, the Three Spirits have led Tamino to a grove where stand three temples, to Wisdom, to Reason, and to Nature. Awed by the grandeur of the temples, Tamino tries to gain entrance to each but is denied, and the Old Priest he questions explains that he has been deceived by the Queen: Sarastro is not a monster but the wise leader of the sacred Brotherhood within the Temple of Wisdom. Tamino is also told that Pamina is still alive. Overjoyed, he plays upon his magic flute, and animals of all kinds approach to listen. Papageno’s pipe is heard as if in response to Tamino’s flute, but they cannot find each other, and Tamino rushes off in search of Pamina.

(As he rushes toward the temple on the right, a voice is heard.)

First Priest
Go back!
Zurück!

Tamino
Go back? I’ll try my fortune here!
(He goes to the temple on the left, and again a voice is heard.)
Zurück? So wag’ ich hier mein Glück!
(Er geht zur linken Pforte; eine Stimme von innen.)

First Priest
Go back!
Zurück!

Tamino
“Go back, go back!” is all I hear.
(He goes to the temple in the center)
One last door remains. I’ll dare
Once more to find an entrance there.

(He knocks. An old priest appears.)
Auch hier ruft man: zurück!
(Er geht zur mittleren Pforte.)
Da seh’ ich noch eine Tür,
Vielleicht find’ ich den Eingang hier.

(Er klopft. Ein alter Priester erscheint.)
