The story follows one of the hatchlings as, with the help of his parents, he learns to survive amidst larger dinosaurs, like the duck-billed hadrosaurs and the fish-eating Baryonyx. The essays following the comic investigate the behavior of dinosaurs.

The essays at the back of the book explore the comic's remarkable setting, the ancient ecosystem of the Morrison Formation, located in what is today the western United States and Canada.
