Behind the Cover: Norman Rockwell’s A Day in the Life with author Will Lach and model Mary Whalen Leonard Free with Museum AdmissionAll ages Join us this Memorial Day to celebrate the opening of Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms with a special author event with Will Lach and Mary Whalen Leonard, who modeled as a little girl for Normal Rockwell—and who Rockwell describes as “the best model I ever had!” We’ll read aloud Lach’s two books—A Day in the Life of a Girl and Norman Rockwell’s A Day in the Life of a Boy—inspired by Rockwell’s paintings of the same name, created as covers for the Saturday Evening Post in 1952. Each picture book features rhyming text chronicling the activities of two children from sunup to sundown. Following the reading, Lach and Leonard will chat about the paintings, Norman Rockwell’s process, and Leonard’s experience working with this titan of American painting. Q&A and book signing to follow. In addition to the reading and discussion, this event will be accompanied by a related craft activity—kids will get the chance to illustrate their own sunup to sundown day!
